Model, actress and businesswomen are all words that describe the fashion icon, Beverly Johnson. I was given the opportunity to chat with her and get the scoop on her role in the upcoming Tyler Perry flick, Good Deeds, her new reality show, Beverly’s Full House and her new haircare line, Model Logic, which by the way is absolutely delightful.

What inspired you to launch your own hair care line?

Well, I’ve been working on a hair care line for decades and I had been flirting with a different line. I represented for innumerous lines of hair care. About ten years ago I ran across this one particular hair care line and I loved it so much. I was the spokesperson for it. After I finished with that contract I always checked back to see if those formulas were available and sure enough the formulas became available and I was able to get my dream formulas. I was able to take those formulas and even make them better. So I am just thrilled. One of the other reasons why I wanted to do my own hair care line is that I wanted to do a line where there was no compromise and when you’re representing a hair care line there’s always things that you don’t like about it. I really felt like I wanted to do something where I could totally have a product that I felt was superior and superb and that’s what I got.

What makes this line different from other brands on the market?

It’s a throwback from the past, but I don’t feel that we [multicultural women] are really being represented in the way of really all that is out there in the way of hair care. Although I do have some Shea butter in some of my products and I love Shea butter, I just feel like the whole thing with grease is so passé. I just wanted to move my product line into the twenty-first century. There’s just so many amazing ingredients and really mixing science with natural products is superb and you’ll see that with my hair care line.

So, I hear you have a new reality show coming up, which I am so excited about. What can we expect to see on the show?

Well, its with the Oprah Winfrey Network and I felt very comfortable working with OWN because of Oprah Winfrey. It is a constructive reality show. You’re not going to get all of that stuff that you get on the other reality shows, which I love. You’ll get a lot of laughs and tears. It’s a lot of fun and it’s about mother-daughter relationships. A lot of people can relate to and hopefully there can be a lot of take-away in the way of tools that one can acquire from watching the show in how to improve their own personal relationships.

I think that’s great! Positive African-American’s on television is ALWAYS a good thing!

We’re really excited about it. It’s a chance I think to really show people me. I mean I’ve learned a lot of things about myself. It’s like you think you know yourself so well and for me it really showed me how much I don’t know about myself and about how much I personally have to learn. So, for my family and me, we felt that we really came away with a lot of benefits.

You also had a role in Tyler Perry’s latest film, Good Deeds, tell me about your character.

I play Gabrielle Union’s mom. It’s a cameo role. I just felt like the movie was such a good movie. Tyler Perry is playing the leading man and I feel he does it with such grace. The story line was terrific and once again to see ourselves on screen, sophisticated, warm, funny, touching, black family. It was just much needed. Once again he is such a pillar in the community, just like Oprah Winfrey and when he asked me to do it I said “Of course!” This is another person that I respect highly. I was very happy with the success of that role.

I always tell people that you’re like a superwoman. You do everything! You have your hand in so many industries. How do you manage it all?

Well, I’m a businesswoman and I love business. I love to create products and I also love to be a part of a team. I’m a team player and I just have been blessed with some of the best people in the way of art directors, CFOs, to the accountant, to book keepers. I think that I love being a part of a team and so I cant take the credit for everything that is going on because it most certainly is a team effort.

And finally, the million-dollar question what are your beauty secrets? How do you manage to stay looking so radiant?

Well, I’ve been reading this book about the blue zones. One of the things that they said was that really exercising and the whole idea of love and family. That is what I try to make sure stays a priority in my life is my love of my family and my community. I think that the kind of balance family, community, taking care of one’s health in the way of really having some kind of exercise program. I hate to use that word exercise program but you gotta do it. You know I went out for my brisk walk this morning and revitalizes me. I play golf, I played golf yesterday and I try to eat as healthy as one can, but I don’t deprive myself of anything. I just think that those balances of things that are most important to you, for me is my secret.

Again, I just want to thank you for being such a positive role model. I’m excited about everything that you’re doing and I look forward to your success!
